The catering food trends of 2016

A great deal has happened in 2016 and as we’ve started the new year, we feel it’s a good time to look back over the last 12 months and the food trends we’ve experienced this year.

During the year, we have worked our professional catering magic for many clients across the South East of England in Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, and have had a number of trips to London to cater for both corporate and private events. This has given us a great insight into what’s popular and what’s falling out of favour with people in terms of food.

2016 has seen the decline of the sandwich lunch for businesses. Previously, companies have felt that plates of sandwiches and sausage rolls would be perfectly adequate when entertaining clients. However, the catering for a corporate event is now a key element in demonstrating the values of a company. We’ve worked with a number of businesses in ensuring their work brunch, lunch or evening event reflects their brand and matches the quality of the work or goods they supply to clients.

Events themselves have seen a change in the way food is served. Rather than traditional buffets (which are still very popular) we have also been providing ‘hot bowl food and cold bowl foodesert-potd’. This is served to guests in individual portions which they can then eat standing up with small cutlery. The bowl food serving also reduces queues and the wait time for a traditional served buffet giving people more time to network or socialise.

In line with the move towards bowl food, dessert pots were a firm favourite in 2016! We love working on creating these little pots of joy and flavour with a huge variety now on our menus. Gone are large bowls of desserts for people to take a portion from – each person can now have their own individual dessert to enjoy.

Afternoon tea remains embedded in British culture and continues to be a popular choice for many events. Here at Pesto Foods, we’ve catered many traditional afternoon teas over the last 12 months but we have also provided a number of afternoon teas ‘with a twist’ and been more daring and creative with the food served. These have been very well received – we can see this trend continuing and developing throughout 2017.

Home dining has grown over the course of 2016 and we are now being bookedprivate-party-food for many more private catering parties. People are opting to stay in and have the food come to them – this means they can relax completely and enjoy their evening without needing to worry about shopping, preparation, serving or clearing up afterwards. With professional caterers looking after you, the event can simply be enjoyed and it seems more and more people are choosing this option not only for special occasions but also for get togethers with family and friends.

However, private dining events are becoming more formal in the way food is served. 2016 was all
about the sharing platters and casual dining we are now being asked to cater more formally with many clients opting for first courses rather than canapés and sharing platters. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues in 2017 for professional caterers.
